Many microbes, which depending on how you define an animal could be classified as one, live in the extreme environments which is a hot spring. These tiny organisms can survive extreme conditions are the clues to the evolution of many more complex organisms.

The Japanese Macaque (a.k.a. Snow Monkey) is found in natural hot springs all over Japan. They spend a good deal of time soaking in them for heat (it gets as cold as 5 degrees Fahrenheit in the mountains), while practicing their social behavior of grooming each other. Unfortunately their populations are decreasing because their habitat is disappearing (humans taking the land for their own use). Therefore the monkeys must raid farms for food and the farmers kill them to protect their crops.
