Are there lingering environmental impacts of the atomic bombs dropped on Japan?

Most of the initial damage by the bombs dropped in 1945 have been repaired, environmentally and in urban areas. However, there is still residual radiation in the soil and land that will not dissipate for a long time. Birth defects and cancer is still of concern in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, among other health concerns. Also, some people still debate over whether it was necessary for the United States to drop the bombs at all.
