The Amazon, in South America, is the largest tract of rainforest in the world.
While both South America and Africa have impressive rainforests, the Amazon in South America is the largest rainforest in the world. The basin is roughly the size of the 48 contiguous United States and covers 40% of the South American Continent. The basin is drained by the Amazon River, the world’s largest river and second longest river next to the Nile River in Africa.
Here is a map of the tropical rainforests of the world showing that the rainforests of South America are larger than that of Africa.
