Yes, it is always illegal to hunt any endangered or threatened species. It is also illegal to hunt on nature preserves or any land where hunting is prohibited. It is also illegal to hunt certain animals out of season.
For most big game you will need to get an appropriate license before you hunt. This is handled by state government and you can apply for permits online. There is a limit on how many of certain animals you can hunt – for example, if you get a deer tag you may use it for one deer. Hunting outside of these guidelines is also illegal.
