The first link shown below details the connection between environmental degradation and poverty in Brazil, but I chose it to illustrate a point since similar circumstances affect American workers. Many industries have negative impacts on the environment, for example mining. The cost of production is lessened where environmental and labor regulations are few or non-existent. Rural poverty is worsened when companies exploit both workers and the land to extract natural resources, leaving communities polluted and then moving on to do the same to another location. The natural wealth of a clean environment is a high cost to pay for short-term profits, and the health of workers is also compromised by work in polluting industries. When some mining companies are done in an area they just leave. Without a safe place to live, and stricken by illness, workers are bound to lose income as well.
