The US Energy Information Administration, an independent research organization reports that the total geothermal energy consumption in 2008 was only .358 quadrillion btu out of the total energy consumption of 99.358 quadrillion btu of energy used that year.  The total geothermal energy capacity was 2,244 megawatts.  According to this data, the geothermal capacity falls drastically short of our total energy consumption and currently is not able to provide for all our power needs.
