There are different types of smog depending on the source of the pollution that is causing it. There are 3 types of smog that are most prevalent:
Volcanic smog: This type of smog takes place when the particles and gases released from a volcano combine with sunlight, oxygen and moisture to create smog. This is commonly found around the Hawaiian islands.
Photochemical smog: Caused mainly by nitrogen oxide, one of the byproducts of internal combustion engines. The smog actually is activated by sunlight so it is commonly found in sunny cities like Los Angles.
Sulfurous smog: Caused by a high concentration of sulfur dioxides which are released by the burning of fossil fuels. Burning coal is often a major cause of this smog and is commonly found in London (sometimes called “London Smog”)
