There are over 200 different cultivars within in the plum family.  The four main types of plums are European plums, Japanese plums, the Damsons & Mirabelles and the “cherry-plums”.  Cherry-plums tend to grow wild and are generally safe to eat.  Japanese plums are the largest of the plum family and tend to be more hardy as well.  A new hybrid is the plumcot or pluot (plum-apricot hybrids).
