There are about 20 species of plum that exist, they are divided into three different groups, Old World Plums, New World Plums, and Apricots.

There are over 200 different cultivars within in the plum family. The four main types of plums are European plums, Japanese plums, the Damsons & Mirabelles and the “cherry-plums”. Cherry-plums tend to grow wild and are generally safe to eat. Japanese plums are the largest of the plum family and tend to be more hardy as well. A new hybrid is the plumcot or pluot (plum-apricot hybrids).
