Ostrich eggs are edible, and are considered a delicacy in many parts of Africa, but there are no locales that eat them in greater numbers than those of a chicken. Even in the poorest regions of sub-Saharan Africa, chickens are abundantly found in villages and on subsistence farms, while ostriches, while not endangered or threatened, are much more rarely encountered by humans. Also, ostrich eggs have much thicker shells, and are more difficult to prepare than chicken or duck eggs.
