There are a number of sustainable Christmas tree farms. A certified tree farm must offer a variety of different habitats meeting the needs of the trees’ different growth phases. Tree farmers also must follow conservation techniques, such as providing natural forest buffers. The American Tree Farm System was established in 1941 in Washington state, when concerns were mounting that the private forests were being cut down too quickly with no efforts at restoration. California’s tree program began later that year, and now include nearly 600 certified tree farms.
