Various species of goose and duck are used for the down feathers in down comforters and jackets. These feathers come from birds that are being slaughtered for meat.
Let me just elaborate on why it’s down — and eider down in particular — that’s popular as filling for our coats. These feathers trap air and heat near the body of the duck, and provide a layer of insulation beneath the watertight outer feathers. Eiders dive in cold water, and their down is what keeps them warm. Our use of down from these diving ducks is our attempt to co-opt their feathers for the same purpose — to keep us warm.
