Are there any surgeries to replace cartilage in knees?

A CARTICEL treatment called Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation (ACI) uses a person’s own cartilage cells to repair cartilage damage in the knee.  The replaced cartilage can form new cartilage helping to repair the damaged area.  ACI surgery candidates are determined through an arthroscopic procedure in which surgeons explore the extent of damage.  If the surgeons finds a person is a candidate a biopsy sample is taken.  From there surgery can be scheduled for the ACI procedure.
