Here is the problem: Dubai has a number of LEED-certified buildings, even Gold certification, but that doesn’t make them eco-friendly. It is certainly a good effort, and Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum has dictated that all new construction meet LEED requirements, which is also great. But that doesn’t change the fact that these buildings, especially the hotels, are excessive and hurt the environment more than help it. The construction of the islands required dredging and filled the water with silt that hurt wildlife, mangroves and coral reefs and increase coastal erosion.
Interesting question, I’d like to know, too!
