Trash incineration used to be more popular in the mid 20th century, but environmental concerns have led us to rely more on landfills. The new waste-to-energy plants, however, are giving new life to incineration. Instead of just burning the trash to get rid of it, these power plants capture the energy from the incineration to generate electricity. There are currently 98 of these types of plants operating across 29 states in the US.
