Are there any state or federal school programs to teach kids about where their food comes from, and where their wastes go?

Yes, the USDA has begun an extensive outreach program to educate kids about where their food comes from and then where it goes. Many schools have started gardens on school grounds to educate students about how food can be grown and how to care for it. Further classroom instruction has included a basic knowledge of food systems as well as material adapted to address the growing concern or organic waste including food scraps.
