Are there any standards that a company must meet before it can promote itself as “Green?”

Unfortunately not. The USDA sets standards for food products to be called organic and the U.S. Green Building Council has set up LEED certification for green buildings, but there is no overall green certification process, much to the chagrin of many who feel that the words organic and sustainable used to describe a more responsible way of life than they do in their current usages. Read The Omnivore’s Dilemma, by Michael Pollan, for an in-depth discussion of the definitions and usages of words like green, organic and sustainable.
