Yes. As reported by BBC News in 2009, a massive solar project–Desertec Industrial Initiative–is being constructed by a consortium of European businesses. The project includes solar energy fields along North Africa’s Saharan desert. It’s estimated that the project will be complete and ready to supply Europe with power by 2015. The project hopes to supply Europe with %15 of its energy needs by 2050.
To add to jet’s post, the Desertec Foundation says that if only 0.3% of the Sahara were covered with solar panels, it could support all of Europe’s energy needs. Increasing that coverage to 1% would power the entire world.
