Photovoltaic cells are the parts of solar panels that turn sunlight into energy. They are used in solar panels, including those used to power solar-driven cars. These cells are comprised of semiconductors which absorb sunlight. The sunlight releases electrons within the semiconductor which produce the electricity in the battery and motor of solar cars.
Solar panels can help supplement an electric vehicle’s power requirements, but if you are talking about a regular passenger car, it may take a week or more to fully charge a vehicle’s battery from solar panels on the car. Scott Cornell from the East Bay Electric Auto Association has done some work on putting solar panels on home-converted vehicles. If you would like to know more, you can contact the East Bay Electric Auto Association and have a chat with him.
