Fish don’t shed their scales. As the fish grows, so do its scales. Usually when a fish seems to be shedding, it’s a sign that the fish is unhealthy and stressed out. Sloughing off scales can leave the fish exposed to infection, and usually mean that the water conditions it is living in are not right for the fish to happily and healthily live.
