As far as reproduction goes, reptiles fall into two categories: Oviporous and Ovoviviporous. Oviporous means that the animals lay eggs with a shell and the offspring comes out of the shell. Ovoviviporous means that the eggs are carried internally and when it’s time for the offspring to be born, it breaks through the shell and emerges from the parent. This can look like a live birth but it is not. Only mammals and some fish have true live births.
All reptiles lay eggs, with the exception of Night lizards. They are viviparous, which means they have live births. The mother forms a placenta just like mammals and gives birth to live young.
