Yes! The Zero Rally in Africa is a several day long race that’s only open to electric, hybrid, hydrogen, and biofuel cars. It was done in 2009. I’m not sure if it ever happened again (the original website is no longer operational), but then it ran from Victoria Falls, Zambia to Cape Town, South Africa.
The Electric Vehicle Conversion Convention (EVCCON) is also a good one. It is for people who put electric motors and batteries into the bodies of old cars. Converting an electric vehicle is a lot of fun because people get to customize it and do pretty much whatever they want to it. At the EVCCON, people with really fancy conversions pit them against each other. EVCCON has only happened once so far and the second rally is scheduled for September 2012. Conversions themselves are nothing new, however. People have been converting electric cars for practical use for a long time.
