Ants are related to other stinging insects such as bees and wasps, and as such most breeds of ants are able to secrete an antiseptic chemical that is toxic to basteria. Some ants have rather strong mandibles that make for a painful bite. Other breeds can spray formic acid, which does cause some inflammation.
However, the Maricopa Harvester ant is widely considered to be the most venomous insect in the world. It’s LD50 value (this signifies the dosage needed to kill 50% of a test population) is .12mg/kg.
I don’t know about you, but I have been in some areas that are covered in fire ants. You do not want these ants anywhere near your skin. They can deliver venom into your skin that is very painful. Fire ants are pretty common in the South and, like most ants, come in huge packs. If you see red ants, beware!
