Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has made it clear that, after seeing the damage done by the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, he is against the expansion of offshore drilling in California. The governor, in fact, dropped a bill that he himself championed that would allow offshore drilling off of Santa Barbara County. California’s coasts are currently closed, meaning no offshore drilling is allowed there.
While no new drilling and leasing is allowed, the existing platforms offshore CA continue to produce oil, and development drilling does occur.
