Carpets are particularly difficult to recycle because of the labor entailed by separating all of its layers of materials. In 2001 an organization called CARE (Carpet America Recovery Effort) was established as a nonprofit to facilitate the recycling of old carpets. See the links below for resources on where to take old carpets to be recycled.
There are many different ways to recycle carpet. Carpet should not be thrown in the trash because it is full of chemicals that will stay in a landfill and not decompose for a very long time. There are many different carpet reclamation sites and you can find one near you on sites like the one for the America Carpet Recovery Effort and Earth911.org. If you live in San Francisco you can take it to the SF Carpet Recycling center. You also have the option of donating it to an organization that uses second hand carpet in some way.
