There are a bunch of tablet PC’s available, but none of them have the sort of demand that the iPad has shown. Dell, HP, Toshiba, HP, and some other lesser known companies all have iPads either on the market or in production, but you rarely hear about them because the iPad has capabilities that a lot of them do not. I’m sure that in the near future there will be more to rival the iPad, but the iPad may take over the market almost completely by then.
India has just announced that it will be targeting its student market with a government-subsidized $30 linux-based tablet device. While not technically a pc, this tablet, called the Sakshat, is fully capable of doing all one would expect a pc to do. At less than 10% of the cost of an iPad, the Sakshat is most certainly a threat to Apple’s tablet marketshare. However, there is no word as of yet regarding future availability in the US.
