The European Union reported a 1.3% decrease in carbon emissions from 2007-2008. The EU is claiming that their data means they are on track for CO2 reduction targets established in the Kyoto Protocol. However, the economic recession had a lot to do with Europe’s reduced carbon emissions. It will be important for the EU to track their emissions closely over this next year as the economy (hopefully) rebounds, to determine which measures must be taken to ensure that emission reduction continues.
