New York City gets its tap water from 3 reservoirs, and it is extremely drinkable without being treated. There are no treatment processes for the water before it reaches the tap. They simple add some fluoride and pump it in. The reservoirs are in upstate NY and they are part of the Delaware system, the Catskill system, and the Croton system. I personally went to the Ashokan Reservoir recently and it was beautiful!
Unless the government releases a warning that waters are unsafe, it would be ok to drink some. You should get one of those water pumps, which are great for the outdoors and filter out harmful bacteria!
