Currently, there are no oil rigs on the Great Lakes, although many drilling projects on the Lakes have been proposed, since there are known oil deposits under the water. The state of Michigan banned drilling in the Great Lakes in 2002, and federal law also protects against drilling there. Drilling does occur on shore, however. Some are pushing for a ban against offshore drilling in the Great Lakes to be put in the Michigan constitution for further protection.
