Are there any animals that are not allowed in zoos?

In the US, the animals allowed in zoos are regulated by the Animal Welfare Act. Zoos are required to have certain permits in order to acquire animals, and they must provide adequate care for the animals in their facility.

There is much debate about allowing certain animals, like elephants, to be put in zoos. However, for now the debate does not center around prohibitions on putting these animals in the zoos, but rather on encouraging zoos to release the animals.
