There are submarines that run on diesel. Most of these submarines were used in WWII. In the 80’s, project 877 was done by the Russian navy to build lead, diesel submarines. It was considered a success as it increased efficiency of the submarine and was able to sustain long range trips underwater. The Germans built a non-nuclear submarine in the early 2000’s that uses an atmospheric air independent propulsion system to make it run.
Submarine technology predates nuclear tech, so there has to be some relics out there still or the older tech.
Yes, there are still diesel and diesel-electric powered submarines. And some research submarines are purely electric. However, most if not all large, particularly military submarines are nuclear based. And if you have a bunch of money laying around you could buy your own sub from these guys.
