There are many natural herbal remedies that have been used for depression for many decades. The most popular of those include St. John’s Wort, Passionflower, Valerian root, Licorice, Ginseng, Basil, Ginger, Rosemary, Thyme and Fennel.
Vitamins B, B12 help, as well as St. Johns wort and the ones listed above. However, if your depression is due to a chemical imbalance, St. Johns wort could make your symptoms worse. It did for my father. See a health professional before you try herbal remedies.
There are many homeopathic and herbal remedies for depression, including Chinese and holistic medicine such as Albizzia, which has been used as an alternative to Prozac. But keep in mind there are various diagnostic procedures that should be held by a professional before these remedies are used. Also keep in mind, depression can be a byproduct of stree or diet as well.
I am surprised that noone has mentioned Rhodiola Rosea. The Nordic Journal of Psychiatry published the results of the first double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of rhodiola rosea extract in patients diagnosed with depression. This study indicates that rhodiola rosea extract was significantly more effective in alleviating symptoms associated with depression than a placebo.
