Are there any mattresses that are toxic?

The majority of mattresses purchased today contain toxins, unless you are buying organic mattresses and even then you have to ensure that the entire mattress is organic, not just the cotton.

Most mattresses are made using petroleum based chemicals, foams, plastics and flame retardants.  These compounds are not stable and evaporate into the air and into the lungs of the person laying directly on it.  Petroleum based compounds have been shown to weaken or damage the immune and nervous system.  Autoimmune disorders have also been linked with exposure to these chemicals.  Other common problems caused by exposure are soft tissue damage, organ and brain damage, arthritis etc.
