We currently use carbon capturing mechanisms to reduce the amount of carbon output from various sources such as power stations. It’s not really a device so much as it is just isolating carbon from the other gases and transporting it through pipelines to storage. Storing carbon for now either means injecting it into oilfields or burying it underwater or underground.
What phillius described is called carbon capture and storage, and is coming under fire from a few different places, including Greenpeace. This is because CSS is essentially the large scale storage of a poisonous gas–poisonous because in large volume CO2 can cause hypercapnia, a build up of CO2 in the blood that prevents oxygen from getting where it needs to go.
