There are currently not any laws in the US about shark finning. However, your question is rather timely because this has been a topic in the news lately. Lawmakers are currently working on a law to ban shark fin in New York City, the third largest consumer of the product in the world. This practice is frowned upon because the sharks are often discarded after their fins are removed and the rest of the fish is wasted. Many say that immitation shark meat actually tastes better than the real fin, so if the law does pass, sharks will be saved and your soup may be more delicious!
