Yes there are many community gardens in San Francisco. The San Francisco League of Urban Gardeners maintains over 40 community gardens and 100 neighborhood gardens. With a budget of over $1.6 million and a staff of 30, they are a gardening force. Gardens can be found agancent to schools and parks, or in empty lots.
Community Gardens are a growing trend in the city of San Francisco and are in high demand. Although I could not find sizes/acreage for each garden site, this is a great list of the many community gardens : http://www.sfgro.org/sfgardens.php?passedfromGFE=1
