Auguste Mouchout was one of the first in the 19th century to question whether fossil fuels would really last forever. He invented the first solar motor, and in 1861 produced a steam engine powered by the sun. Unfortunately it took another 100 years or so for people to actually put money into significant reasearch for using solar power.
I don’t think inventors receive much do credit. There aren’t any famous inventors, though their inventions have gained fame. Like a lot of the contraptions used in LEED building construction, or plumbing systems that help conserve water or reuse grey water. The FOOD-SAVER for instance, helps vacuum seal foods to prevent waste. But the inventor’s name isn’t tied to it.
