“5 Hour Energy” brand energy supplement contains a variety of stimulants, vitamins, and a handful of flavoring additives, and the product is designed to optimize bodily activity level and performance on mental and physical tasks. Like all stimulants, the ingredients in 5 Hour Energy (see 1st link below) can have harmful side effects on the nervous system, body temperature regulation, heart rate, blood pressure, sleep cycle, urinary tract, and other bodily systems. It also contains caffeine, which is a documented addictive chemical, also present in many other common beverages such as coffee, tea, cocoa, and many sodas.
Overall, the product is probably about as safe as drinking a cup of coffee. In moderation, it probably won’t harm you as long as you are not allergic
Well depending on how you would define “chemical,” I’d say the level of caffeine in one 5-Hour Energy Drink can be quite harmful. Large amounts of caffeine can result in heart palpitations, anxiety and dehydration. With such a small serving size, it’s easy to forget that these small “energy shots” still contain a significant amount of caffeine. Supposedly 5-Hour Energy contains mainly caffeine and herbal ingrediants to boost energy. The caffeine by itself can cause hypoglycemic episodes (low blood sugar) which is further complicated when you throw the herbal stimulants into the mix. All in all, it’s important to be careful when consuming such drinks and to make sure that one is properly hydrated.
I agree with PBDesai. It is recommended that you only drink one ounce to start out with of this drink. People are strongly discouraged from drinking more than one bottle of this within a 24 hour period. In addition, there is concern in the medical community about such drinks, as the effects of caffeine have not been studied on the developing brains of children, teenagers, and young adults.
