Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide is introducing a new green hotel chain, called Element (www.elementhotels.com). The first hotel, scheduled to open this July in Lexington, Mass., is serving as a laboratory of sorts to explore the design, construction and operations for all future Element properties (the company plans to open more than 20 hotels by the end of 2009). Each Element hotel will be required to pursue certification from the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.
Some of the certification requirements include using roofing materials that reflect heat from the sun; incorporating a comprehensive recycling system in the hotel; using chlorofluorocarbon-free refrigerants for heating, cooling and ventilation systems; purchasing wind power; and offering priority parking to those driving hybrid vehicles. Room rates will start at around $165 a night.”
