Machrihanish Dunes in Scotland which was set to open in spring 2009 was the first golf course in over 100 years that was built on a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). There are no chemicals, pesticides, heavy machinery or artificial irrigation systems allowed on the 270 acres of the course. In the United States Black Gold Golf Club opened in Yorba Linda, California in April 2005 including 200 acres of challenging greens and scruffy brush land that is off limits to golfers. The course what developed with the idea of natural open space in mind, and is welcoming to different animals including birds. It was also reported that Arnold Palmer is backing an environmentally friendly course in the Missouri River hills that will require less fertilizer and pesticides on their narrow fairways.
