In 2003, the Missouri Rural Crisis Center held a conference with Mexican farmers to address economic concerns. Prices for grain and livestock were reduced as a result of the North American Free Trade Agreement. The patchwork Family Farms program was began by Missouri farmer Ron Perry of the Missouri Rural Crisis Center. The Patchwork Family Farms program has helped sustain the pork industry in rural communities by promoting fair trade, and ensuring quality by prohibiting the use of growth hormones and providing the livestock adequate sunshine, space and quality of life.
