While at this point it is a rare practice (accounting for less than 0.1 percent of all tropical forest logging), sustainable forestry can be done. Sustainable forestry means maintaining the diversity of forests, a greater involvement of local communities in management, and using “plantation” style forests on poor soil or somewhat polluted lands. The state of Washington has been highly praised for its sustainable logging practices due to factors like the time between harvests and the size of clearcuts.
Believe it or not, there is such a thing as “eco-friendly logging.” In California, the Conservation Fund focuses on balancing “natural resource protection with economic goals.” The sales from the timber that they log goes to forest and watershed restoration.
Yes, the Forest Stewardship Council creates standards for sustainable logging practices that are in line with environmental concerns as well as humanity concerns relative to the areas being logged. FSC accredits, companies, communities and organizations that are involved with sustainable logging which includes replenishing felled trees, keeping forests forests, avoiding delicate habitats and not using any hazardous chemicals.
