The first gold rush in the US was in North Carolina, and there was gold mining in the Appalachians (especially the Carolinas and Georgia) for much of the 19th century and into the 1950s. The reserves present are tiny compared to the west (and Nevada has far and away the most of any US state). Rejuvenation of a small gold mine is in the works in S. Carolina – http://www.romarco.com/projects/haile/ – there was some gold mining in SC into the 1990s.
The wikipedia article has info about gold mining history by state.
