Pollution is linked to causing respiratory disease and some cancers. Water pollution can cause deadly bacterial infections especially in children who drink polluted water. Also, research conducted by NIEHS scientists has shown that long-term exposure to air pollutants increases the risk of respiratory illnesses such as allergies, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and lung cancer. Children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable to the health effects of ozone, fine particles, and other airborne toxicants.
