Diesel as a fuel actually creates more carbon than gasoline, on the order of fifteen percent. However, diesel engines tend to get 20 to 40% better gas mileage than their gasoline counterparts, which balances out. So a gas powered car that gets 30mpg will be better for the enviroment than a diesel that gets 15.
