The city of Los Angeles has a program called RecycleBank in which 1,500 single family homes can place special tags on their recycle bins, the bins are weighed at the time of collection, and the residents receive points per pound of recyclables, and participating stores recognize these points as currency for purchasing products.

Western Massachusetts runs a similar program for certain communities. It’s a “pay as you throw program” to encourage recycling and reduce the amount of waste.
