Yes, chlorine and iodine are two chemicals that have been used for centuries to purify drinking water. These are used to kill and sterilize bacteria and other microorganisms; the chemicals break down the proteins and amino acids that make up the toxic substances in dirty water. Despite this, they do fail to kill some particular bacteria including cyclospora which can cause digestive problems.
