There are few cars that get 50 mpg, the Toyota Prius being one. However, it starts at around $23,000.
In comparison, the 2010 Nissan Versa, which you can buy from a private party for around $10,000, gets up to 34 mpg on the highway.
Tata, the Indian car manufacturer, has created a car that gives us hope for the future. It’s called the Tata Nano and sells for around $2,500. It gets 54 mpg, but it’s not up to U.S. safety standards yet. Unfortunately, when it finally does get exported to the U.S., it will likely cost substantially more than it costs in India. The Tata’s European export, the Europa, is priced around $6,000. Regardless of its eventual price, it will no doubt be a cheaper option than what we have right now.
