Though LEED has been the certification of choice for many local governments, universities, and other entities attempting to green their construction projects, other certification processes do exist – and some are even more ambitious than LEED. Probably the most ambitious certification a building project can aspire to is that of Certified Living Building. While LEED tends to focus simply on building efficiently and with the most sustainable materials possible, in order to minimize energy use and waste, Living Buildings go even further. A Living Building completely eliminates many forms of waste, and is designed to be net-zero-energy and net-zero-water, among a number of other requirements. As the green building industry becomes more advanced, Living Buildings will hopefully become more and more common.
