Fish belonging to the group Dipnoi, or lung fish, not only can breathe air – some species actually require air to survive. Lung fish are a small group of large, nearly snake-like fish found in parts of Africa, South America, and Australia. They are likely more closely related than any other fish species to land-dwelling vertebrates like reptiles and mammals. The lungs of lungfish are thought to have evolved from the “swim bladders” which other fish use to adjust their buoyancy while swimming.
