Toxic waste can cause all kinds of birth defects, depending on the mother’s health, levels of exposure, and types of disruption that the toxic waste causes. Proximity to the toxic waste could predetermine the sort of birth defects that may occur. According to the California Birth Defects Monitoring Program, if a woman lives within 1/4 of a Superfund site in the first three months of pregnancy, her child has a higher risk of being born with conotruncal heart defects (3 times more likely than average;) neural tube defects, including spina bifida and anencephaly (2 times more likely than average;) and cleft lip and palate (same rate as average.)
